The Rule of Three
In design, we like to use a guideline called the rule of 3s. This principle using odd numbers serves as a tool for creating more visual depth and interest.
The standard equation when choosing colors for a room is 60% Main Room Color, 30% Secondary Color and 10% Accent Color. Choose three different colors like neutral walls with a bold navy accent wall and green pillows with navy trim. Or choose three shades from the same color family.
You can also use the Rule of Threes for accessories, colors and fabric schemes and furniture groupings. You can also apply this guideline when adding pendant lights over a kitchen island or hanging artwork.
The most important thing to remember about the Rule of Threes is that it is simply a guideline for design. Consider the scale of your room and its elements when applying this rule.
